How it all started....

A vine has the ability to survive.

One morning I was in my garden and noticed a plant growing in this muddy, shaded, trampled spot. As I got closer, I realized it was a vine growing in this less than adequate environment. When I reached for the vine, I noticed parts of it were climbing onto a raspberry bush, of which receives roughly seven hours of sun a day. In that moment I realized that this vine had been fighting for survival in its current environment. Sure, it could survive, but the rate of growth would be slow, and who knows if it would ever end up blooming flowers. Instead of the vine accepting these conditions, it reached for the raspberry bush. It decided to use another plant to climb to areas of more sunlight - the vine found a way to get to where it needed to be. As summer progressed, Colorado hit us with hail three times in two days. After these tough environmental conditions, I went outside to check on the vine, expecting it to have been beaten down and struggling. Instead, what I found was that the entire vine was now growing on the raspberry bush. It seemed as though the more challenging the environment was, the stronger the vine got. As the months passed, the vine continued to use the raspberry bush as support, until eventually the vine could independently flourish. It had started thriving on its own, and in fact, even bloomed the most beautiful orange flowers. Every year this vine comes back in my garden. It still occasionally uses the raspberry bush for support, some years more than others, sometimes receiving more shade than sun, but every year, it continues to grow beautiful flowers.
